In Why I Write, Didion ponders the act of writing: I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. Here, Didion touches on topics ranging from newspapers (the problem is not so much whether one trusts the news as to whether one finds it), to the fantasy of San Simeon, to not getting into Stanford. They showcase Joan Didion's incisive reporting, her empathetic gaze, and her role as an articulate witness to the most stubborn and intractable truths of our time ( The New York Times Book Review ). With a forward by Hilton Als, these twelve pieces from 1968 to 2000, never before gathered together, offer an illuminating glimpse into the mind and process of a legendary figure. ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Root, Library Journal “Reaches deep beneath the surface of words unspoken, wounds unhealed, and secrets untempered to break them open in order for fresh light to break through.”-Morgan Jerkins, New York Times bestselling author of This Will Be My Undoing and Caul Baby Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Somebody’s Daughter “This is the kind of book that makes you different when you’re done.”-Ashley C. In her stunning debut, the creator of Black Liturgies weaves stories from three generations of her family alongside contemplative reflections to discover the “necessary rituals” that connect us with our belonging, dignity, and liberation. At the other end of the apprehension spectrum is a New Adult gay romance, Andrew Grey's gentle Electrochemistry, with almost zero anxiety or brutality, featuring college men on a cruise to romance and possibly a forever kind of love. Featuring patriotism, angst and violence, Kendall McKenna's Strength of the Mate, is a story of American Marines at war, but with a twist. The first novel combines gay romance with a military warzone story and paranormal elements. Both are the third in a series, but each can be read as a stand-alone novel. Today, we have two outstanding books that fit into that classification, although they could not be more different. The erotic romance genre isn't limited to stories of men who love women, it also includes the growing category of gay romance. These two narrators, the protagonist and archivist, become witnesses to a thirty-year span of US and Mexican history. The archivist gradually reveals herself, and we learn her relationship to Harrison Shepherd and what happened to him. At that point, the structure shifts to a series of diary entries, written by Harrison. The early chapters are told in third person by an omniscient narrator, but the reader learns, via an archivist’s entry, that these chapters were written by Harrison Shepherd years later, after he had become a notable author. The novel is complex in its narrative structure. When the romance grows stale, Salome takes Harrison to Mexico City to live with another of her lovers. Left mostly to himself, Harrison learns to cook and helps in the kitchen. Salome left Harrison’s American father in Virginia and traveled to Mexico to live a lavish lifestyle with Enrique. Protagonist Harrison Shepherd is thirteen years old lives with his Mexican mother, Salome, and her paramour, Enrique. Ambitious historical fiction that begins on an island off the coast of Mexico in 1929. I love that George (Jake) gets back to Sadie, even if it is not the way that, he, she, and I wanted it to be. not the one I had hoped for, but for me probably a more realistic one. I think most modernly we call it de ja vu ….Īnd what did you think of the closing…. What did you think of Kings research? I personally did not know much about the facts surrounding the assassination so I may not be the best judge but it felt informative and true to me. (*sigh… a moment of silence for a GREAT book/audio). The references to me became like the “Easter Egg” hidden in the Ready Player One book. I did not realize that many of his books were written around this area or Maine, or that King had created so many fictional towns for Maine. I loved the fact that King put references from his others books throughout the story. This is a page where we can openly discuss the book with no fear of saying anything that would spoil the book for those who have not read it yet. That means that this post is for those tho have read this book or listened to the audio. STOP! Please remember that this is a spoiler page. Way to surround yourself with some real winners, Dorothy. Then, as if that was not enough evidence of her less-than-stellar judgment, the gal goes on to befriend a pansy, a heartless maniac, and a brainless freak. First, she chooses that good-for-nothing terrier, Toto, as her closest companion (no offense, little doggie, but you ain’t scaring nobody with your timorous, tenuous shrieks of panic - hardly a bark, if you ask me.please ask me). Man, that Dorothy really knows how to pick them. A Critic's Meta-Review: 4/5 The Scarecrow of Oz by L. Released as two separate albums taken from tapes recorded on the same day, the first “Sunday At The Village Vanguard” emphasised the playing of Scot La Faro (who was tragically killed in a car accident just 10 days later) while the second, “Waltz For Debby”, completed the release of most of this material. While many would claim that the high point of his career was the six months in 1958 that he spent with Miles Davis and, shortly after that, his contribution to “Kind Of Blue”, this live session recorded at The Village Vanguard, New York City in June 1961 is justifiably the equal of that. Basing his work almost exclusively around the piano/bass/drums trio format, his shortened career yielded over 60 albums, a monumental output. (* alternate versions also present on remastered CD re-releases)īill Evans created a unique style in jazz yet he has often been overlooked as his quiet, introverted approach has been sometimes confused with jazz as easy listening.
